Best practice guide for maintaining your filtration

Filters are a vital part of systems, helping to keep gases and liquids in your processes free from contaminants.

They help to keep your systems running smoothly and efficiently. But they need maintenance. If left unchecked, filters can become blocked and clogged, having a negative impact on your production.

Maintaining filters is important for a few reasons; it helps to protect equipment, avoids costly downtime, improves energy efficiency in the system, saves you costs and can increase productivity. Can you really afford not to?

But what’s the best way to maintain them? Follow these six simple steps to make sure your filters are performing to their best, and for as long as possible.

1. Understand when it’s time to change your filter

It’s essential to remember that filters are consumable items that can become clogged with contaminants, as well as suffer wear and tear over time. Knowing when your filter needs changing is key to maintaining your filtration, and there are a few ways to determine when it’s time:

  • Monitor and check the pressure. If the pressure in the system drops, it’s often because a filter is losing efficiency. It could be time to change the filter.
  • Monitor and check flow rate. If the flow changes unexpectedly it could be because a filter needs replacing.
  • Noticing downstream contamination. If there are contaminants downstream then your filter is no longer sealing, or it could be because loaded media is shedding particulate. Either way, now is the time to put in a new filter.
  • Check the filter manufacturer’s specifications. Manufacturers should recommend how often filters need changing and you should replace the filter according to these guidelines. While service intervals depend on the application and amount of use, we recommend replacing filters that have been in service for over 12 months to prevent equipment failures or production shutdowns.
  • Use modern technology. Use advanced monitoring tools and sensors to provide real-time data on filter performance, that alert you when a filter needs changing

2. Instil a preventative maintenance programme

By having a preventative maintenance programme, and including filter check and change as part of this, you can ensure that your filters are replaced regularly. This proactive approach can help maintain optimal filter functionality and prevent unexpected downtimes. You should set up the schedules around optimal time frames based on filter usage, running hours, and replacement needs.

  • Regular visual inspection. As part of the preventative maintenance programme you should regularly check the state of the filter and look for any signs of wear and tear, and contamination. Questions you need to ask yourself include: What colour is the filter, is there any heavy loading of particulate, are there any holes in it or voids in the seal? If there are, then it’s time to change the filter.

3. Regularly clean the filter and surrounding area

Some filters are designed to be reused. If yours is, then you should set up a regular cleaning schedule and you need to make sure the filter is cleaned correctly. There are a few different types of filters that need a slightly different approach. For example,

  • Textile Filter Media: to avoid damaging the filter material, use appropriate cleaning solutions and techniques to remove accumulated contaminants.
  • Coalescing/Reverse Flow Elements: These filters often require backflushing or reverse flow to remove trapped particulates and aerosols.
  • Panel Elements: Clean panel elements using low-pressure air or water to avoid damaging the filter media.

It’s also important to keep the filter surroundings clean. Any contaminants in the immediate area could readily leak into a filtration system. So, regularly cleaning the filter housing and surrounding areas can prevent the risk of contamination and ensure the filters operate in a clean environment.

4. Optimise operating conditions

Make sure the filters are working within their specific parameters, including the system pressure, temperature and flow rate. If the filters are working outside of these conditions, they could experience excessive wear which reduces their lifespan. You can easily use pressure regulators, temperature controls, and flow meters to maintain optimal operating conditions and enhance filter performance. 5. Train staff
